VIC:Too many unsafe cars on Vic roads: study
MELBOURNE, April 10 AAP - One in three cars on Victoria's roads is unsafe, according
to research by the state's peak mechanics' group.
Tyres are the car part most likely to cause problems, ahead of brakes and lights the
Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce study found.
Checks on brakes, tyres, lights, steering and seatbelts on 774 vehicles at VACC aligned
mechanics found 35 per cent of those were unsafe between January and March this year
It's the highest quarterly figure since the VACC five-point safety check started in 2005.
VACC director David Purchase said the results should alarm motorists and government agencies.
"This is a genuine attempt to highlight the fact that too many unsafe cars, utes, vans
and trucks on our roads are not well maintained," he said.
"And the most frustrating thing is that a regular service by a professional would address
most of these basic faults.
"However left unchecked, that worn tyre, faulty seatbelt or broken light could result
in loss of life."
