NSW:Man in court for murder of woman in 1991

One of the men accused of sexually assaulting a Filipina woman before murdering her
19 years ago has briefly appeared before court.

40-year-old RODNEY JAMES PATERSON, who was arrested on Tuesday, didn't apply for bail
in Sydney's Central Local Court today and will appear via video link again from Bathurst
jail, for a mention on September 29.

The naked body of 37-year-old PIA NAVIDA was found in the Royal National Park south
of Sydney in 1992.

The cold case was reopened two years ago but the DNA testing that lead to the arrest
of PATERSON, and a second 40-year-old man, was only performed last month.

VIC:Too many unsafe cars on Vic roads: study

MELBOURNE, April 10 AAP - One in three cars on Victoria's roads is unsafe, according
to research by the state's peak mechanics' group.

Tyres are the car part most likely to cause problems, ahead of brakes and lights the
Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce study found.

Checks on brakes, tyres, lights, steering and seatbelts on 774 vehicles at VACC aligned
mechanics found 35 per cent of those were unsafe between January and March this year

It's the highest quarterly figure since the VACC five-point safety check started in 2005.

VACC director David Purchase said the results should alarm motorists and government agencies.

"This is a genuine attempt to highlight the fact that too many unsafe cars, utes, vans
and trucks on our roads are not well maintained," he said.

"And the most frustrating thing is that a regular service by a professional would address
most of these basic faults.

"However left unchecked, that worn tyre, faulty seatbelt or broken light could result
in loss of life."

Qld: Five yachts finish Brisbane to Gladstone

BRISBANE, April 11 AAP - Five yachts are already home in the 61st Brisbane to Gladstone
race, but the last boat in the fleet isn't expected to cross the line until lunch time
on Easter Sunday.

Peter Harburg's pocket rocket Black Jack romped to an impressive line honours victory
in the 308 nautical mile race on Saturday morning, finishing at 9.07am (AEST).

Quantum Racing took second place at 1.23pm (AEST), closely followed by Wot Yot, Wot
Now and Shogun.

Racing under principal helmsman Mark Bradford, Black Jack's crew overcame relatively
light winds to become the first 20-metre yacht to complete the physically demanding classic
in less than 24 hours.

Bradford was full of praise for the crew who had virtually no sleep overnight.

They had averaged 14.86 knots in winds that failed to gust above 20 knots.

"It was a fairly uneventful night which improved with the fast ride across the top
of Hervey Bay," Bradford said.

Black Jack's official course time was 22 hours, seven minutes and 18 seconds, setting
the race handicap clock ticking against 47 rivals.

The yacht had docked and the crew were enjoying a cold beer while Quantum Racing, Wot
Now, Wot Yacht and Shogun duelled for the minor places.

All four high performance yachts continued to race in close company but still had 55
miles to race when Black Jack finished.

Quantum Racing is tipped to take provisional handicap honours, which will be confirmed on Sunday.

She finished at 26 hours, 21 minutes and 23 seconds.

Microsoft exceeds expectations on buoyant sales
Byline: Steve Lohr The New York Times Media Group
Edition: 1
Section: FINANCE/BUSINESS

Microsoft reported quarterly sales and profit gains that surpassed Wall Street's expectations and delivered an optimistic outlook on Thursday, suggesting that a weakening economy would not slow it down.

The performance was led by Microsoft's three major businesses: personal computer operating systems, office productivity programs and software that runs computers in corporate data centers.
The company continues to struggle and lose money as it battles Google in its new markets for Internet services and online advertising. But for Microsoft, that is a financial challenge of the future, one overshadowed by the heft and continuing growth in its personal computer products, led by the Windows Vista operating system and Office 2007. Microsoft's desktop software divisions accounted for 56 percent of the company's revenue and more than 80 percent of the operating profit of its product groups.

"Microsoft is still investing without much to show for it yet in the online business, but that is kind of nitpicking when you look at the results of the company over all," said Charles di Bona, a securities analyst for Sanford C. Bernstein. "The strong performance seems to be pretty much across the board."

Other leading technology companies, like Intel and Apple, have reported strong quarterly results, only to have their shares punished after they warned of cloudy outlooks given the increasing possibility of an economic recession.

But Microsoft executives still sound confident. In a conference call with analysts, Christopher Liddell, Microsoft's chief financial officer, said, "We have not seen any significant spillover for an economic slowdown in the U.S."

Sixty percent of Microsoft's business is now outside the United States, which helps insulate the company from the chill of a slowdown in the American economy. Even so, Liddell noted that Microsoft's sales in the American market in the last six months had grown at a healthy 15 percent clip.

For its 2008 fiscal year ending in June, Microsoft offered a bit more optimism. The company said revenue for the year would be $59.9 billion to $60.5 billion, above the analysts' consensus of $59.4 billion. Microsoft said its earnings would be $1.85 to $1.88 a share, up from Wall Street's projection of $1.81 a share.

Fed: Professor says Econtech report essentially flawed

EDS: Story embargoed until 0001 AEST, Thursday, August 23

By Denis Peters

CANBERRA, Aug 23 AAP - An economic analysis on the work of the Australian Building
and Construction Commission (ABCC) and its clampdown on the building industry was based
on flawed principles, a union-backed review has found.

The Econtech report, released last month, found the Australian economy had been the
big beneficiary in the clampdown on building industry strife.

In a case study, Econtech found a 10.7 per cent difference in costs in commercial building
compared to domestic residential from 1994 to 2003 had dropped to 1.7 per cent in 2007.

It said the gain in labour productivity over the same periods was estimated to be 9.4 per cent.

The Econtech report said GDP was 1.5 per cent higher than it otherwise would be, while
the cost of living was 1.2 per cent lower than it would have been, with a $3.1 billion
flow on effect to consumers.

In response, the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union commissioned Newcastle
University professor of economics William Mitchell to examine the cost differentials methodology
used in the report, titled Economic Analysis of Building and Construction Industry Productivity.

Professor Mitchell found that the report was flawed in the way it compared costs in
what it termed commercial construction and domestic construction.

"The first major criticism of the Econtech analysis is that it fails the basic test
for research quality - it fails to be transparent in its method and the results it presents
are incapable of replication," Professor Mitchell said.

Prof Mitchell used what he described as a more transparent and objective method for
estimating the cost differentials between the two sectors.

"The resulting estimates are substantially different from those published by Econtech
yet are consistent with trends in other cost data published by the Australian Bureau of
Statistics," he said.

"I conclude that the lack of transparency in the Econtech analysis and the impossibility
of it being replicated by a third party is evidence of poor research quality.

"Using transparent (though qualified) methods, which are capable of replication, I
can find no evidence to support the stark results presented by Econtech.

"I have also found no evidence to support the hypothesis that a sudden 'event', postulated
by Econtech to be the introduction of the Work Choices and the creation of the Australian
Building and Construction Commission, has altered the time series behaviour of the underlying
data."

NSW: AFIC does nto have authority to sack mufti: Trad

A Muslim community leader has questioned the power of the Australian Federation of
Islamic Councils to sack Sheik TAJ EL-DIN AL HILALY as mufti.

Fairfax newspapers report the federation has abolished the role of mufti .. cut all
ties with the controversial sheik .. and stopped paying his salary.

But KEYSAR TRAD .. president of the Islamic Friendship Association .. says the AFIC
doesn't have the authority to sack the man it made mufti back in 1989.

Mr TRAD's told Sky News the AFIC hasn't paid the sheik since it went into administration
last year .. and is only trying to show it remains relevant after starting up again two
months ago.

He says a board of imams from all over Australia is making a decision about the position
of mufti .. and AFIC's action is gratuitous and presumptuous.

He says Sheik AL HILALY is the most qualified person to be mufti of Australia .. and
is unaware of what's happening because he's at a conference in Turkey.

Analog Devices Named Fastest Growing DSP Supplier.

NORWOOD, Mass., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ --

Analog Devices, Inc. today announced it is the fastest growing supplier in the semiconductor industry's fastest growing market, Digital Signal Processing (DSP). Analog Devices' DSP revenues grew 71 percent from fiscal year 1998 to 1999, nearly three times the growth rate of the overall market. The momentum continued in the first fiscal quarter of 2000, with ADI DSP revenues growing 87 percent compared to the same period in 1999. Industry analysts estimate the overall market growth for DSP was 25.5 percent in 1999, according to DSP market research firm, Forward Concepts. The firm also estimates that the DSP market is growing nearly twice as fast as the entire integrated circuit (IC) industry. ADI's unparalleled growth in the DSP market is driven by the company's focus on communications applications, leadership in high performance analog and DSP technology, and the company's unique ability to integrate these technologies into mixed-signal DSPs.

"ADI is doing very well in fast-growing areas like Internet access technology," said Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts, Tempe, AZ. "Their integrated hardware and software solutions for ADSL and V.90 modems, for example, helped make ADI the fastest growing DSP supplier in 1999. They gained more than a point of market share, more than any of the other major suppliers."

Just over half of all ADI DSP shipments included integrated high performance analog (mixed-signal DSPs) and signal processing software for embedded systems applications. In the real-time portion of the $30 billion embedded systems industry, ADI's strong portfolio of code-compatible DSPs, mixed-signal expertise and brand recognition helped capture a range of applications in the embedded systems market including speech recognition, digital motor control in home appliances and medical MRI systems.

The world's communications bandwidth is doubling every nine months, fueling sales of broadband and wireless concentrator and subscriber equipment based on ADI DSPs. In ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscribers Line), for example, ADI's signal processing technology makes it possible for the installed infrastructure of copper wire to provide Internet access that is 100 times faster than today's methods. In 1999, 80 percent of ADI's DSP revenues were in the communications segment.

"Communications and embedded computing are converging and ADI's technology is well-positioned to enable this new era of signal processing," said Jerald G. Fishman, president and chief executive officer for Analog Devices, Inc. "Our strategy for DSP is to simplify real-time systems design and help our customers get to market fast. We'll do this by combining our DSP and high performance analog technology with software and signal chain expertise."

In 1999 Analog Devices took major steps to strengthen its DSP portfolio, including a joint DSP core development program with Intel and the acquisition of DSP development tools leader, White Mountain DSP. The next decade of ADI DSP will give rise to advancements such as 100 dB analog and DSP on a single chip, the integration of flash and DRAM system-level memories and a leap in DSP memory sizes from megabits to megabytes. Future ADI DSPs will be user configurable and DSP hardware will be tightly coupled with advanced software development environments, facilitating an easy-to-use object-oriented approach to DSP development.

1999 ADI DSP Milestones:

-- ADI achieves number one position in ADSL with over one million chipsets

sold and 90 percent of the world's xDSL systems using ADI technology.

-- ADI enables the industry's highest channel density in Internet server

modems and VoIP with Internet Gateway Processors that have doubled

density every nine months since 1997.

-- ADI's DSPs power the VoIP market share leader, Lucent InterNetworking

Systems (formerly Ascend).

-- Strength of ADI's DSP customer acceptance is evident in the community

of more than 10,000 DSP customers and over 30,000 software developers

ADI's DSP Strategy

ADI is a leading supplier of digital signal processing solutions, including mixed-signal DSPs, general-purpose DSPs, such as the SHARC(R) family, and embedded DSP solutions that serve secure data, ADSL modems, GSM handsets, Internet access, speech processing and motor control applications. ADI leverages 30 years of high performance analog expertise to develop DSPs that make the design challenge easier. ADI's DSP architectures feature simple, yet powerful programming models and are supported by the White Mountain brand of high-quality development tools. The DSP Collaborative(TM) is a comprehensive collection of independent companies and design services consultants serving the ADI DSP community of more than 30,000 software developers. For more information about ADI DSPs visit http://www.analog.com/dsp.

Victory hopes kept in Czech for Berdych.(Reprint)

This news was brought to you by www.7days.ae

With all the focus at the Aviation Club being on the 'big two' of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, third seed Tomas Berdych admitted he's happy to fly under the radar after a gritty win over Russian veteran Nikolay Davydenko.

The 2010 Wimbledon finalist cruised through the opening set and survived a second set tie-break to take the match 6-3, 7-6 and advance to the quarter-finals for the first time in Dubai.

All things going to plan, the Czech will meet Australian Open champion Djokovic in the semi-finals. However, he refuses to look any further than today's final-eight clash with Germany's Philipp Petzschner.

"The last two matches we've played were very close and very tough ones," the 25-year-old said. "He plays a very aggressive game and he likes this surface and the fast conditions.

"He's done well so, for me, it's just the next opponent that I need to get prepared for- start from the beginning, take it point by point and try to go through again."

Before yesterday, Berdych had only won once in 10 meetings against Davydenko, but he got off to the perfect start, breaking twice in the first set as errors plagued the Russian's game.

Both players struggled to make inroads in the second set as the first 10 games went with serve.

Davydenko had a chance to take the initiative at 5-4 up, but Berdych battled back to save two break points. He then took that momentum into the next game where he finally managed a breakthrough courtesy of a couple of Davydenko mistakes.

However, in what would be of some concern for the Czech, he failed to serve out the match, and fell short again in the tie-break having given up a 5-2 lead.

But Berdych eventually found some composure to seal the match on his opponent's serve, and despite the tense finish, was happy enough to pull one back on his rival.

"If somebody would say that he doesn't care [about the record] it's not true," he said. "I know the situation against him and I've played many tough matches, especially the last two or three, they were very close.

But the last three matches are 2-1 for me.

"So if I look at it this way then I'm 2-1 up and I'll take it forward from there.

"He's a really tough opponent, he's not going to give you a single point just like that and that's what he was trying to do all match, and that's why I'm even more happy," he added.

Meanwhile, Ernests Gulbis became the latest seed to bow out of the tournament after Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky upset the Latvian 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

However, there was no such trouble for former world No.7 Richard Gasquet, who came back from 5-2 down in the second set against Sergei Bubka to prevail 6-2, 7-5 on centre court.

After a drop in form and a bad run with injury, the Frenchman has climbed his way back to No.28 in the rankings. And the 24-year-old is adamant he can continue his fine form and win a place in the top 10 once again.

"I'm trying," Gasquet said. "I'm trying to play more aggressive, to serve better, to feel better. "I try my best to come back as the best player in the world. I stopped a lot in 2009. I played a big year last year.
