Vic: More to Wales murder case than revealed, says brother
By Mike Hedge
MELBOURNE, April 11 AAP - Convicted murderer Matthew Wales lied to police about thekilling of his mother and stepfather and the crime should be investigated further, hisbrother said today.
Wales was today sentenced to 30 years jail after pleading guilty to the murder a yearago of Margaret Wales-King and her husband Paul King.
His wife, Maritza, received a suspended, two-year sentence after pleading guilty to
perverting the course of justice.
Outside the court, Wales' brother Damien slammed the police investigation, declaringthere was more to the murders than had been revealed in court.
"This whole case has been dictated by what my brother and sister-in-law have had tosay," Damien Wales said.
"There is more to it."
Matthew Wales claimed he had committed the murders after being pushed to breaking pointby his manipulative mother.
Damien Wales declined to elaborate on his claims against his brother, nor did he suggestwhat further punishment should have been imposed on him.
He said only that police had accepted the word of "two proven liars" and that theyshould have investigated the matter further.
Trial judge Justice John Coldrey accepted that Matthew Wales had killed the elderlycouple because he believed his mother exerted financial and emotional control over himand denigrated his wife and her family.
The judge, however, did not accept that Mrs Wales-King necessarily behaved as her son claimed.
In interviews with police, Matthew Wales claimed her behaviour led to him druggingher and her husband before bludgeoning them and later burying them in a bush grave.
Justice Coldrey said the sentences reflected his belief that Matthew Wales was nota danger to society and that his wife took no part in the planning or execution of themurders.
